The Most Common Garage Door Sizes Sold in Las Vegas, And Why They’re Standard Here.

Las Vegas builders have been using the same garage doors rough openings for 40+ years. If you live in a tract home from Summerlin to Henderson to North Las Vegas, your garage door is probably one of 4 sizes. Here’s what gets sold and installed most, plus the Vegas-specific reasons behind them.

1. Single Car: 8’ x 7’ — The “Older Vegas” Standard.

What it is: 8 feet wide, 7 feet tall.  

Where you see it: Homes built 1960s-1990s in the Historic Huntridge area, East Las Vegas, older parts of Paradise, and many 1-car garages in 2-car homes.  

Why it was common: Cars were smaller, lots were narrower, and it was cheap to frame. Garage door repair companies in Las Vegas might need to order these when you need them.

Why it’s still sold: Replacement. Tens of thousands of these doors are still operating in Vegas. When springs break, homeowners replace with the same size because widening the opening means reframing, stucco work, and HOA approval.  

Vegas quirk: Tight fit for modern SUVs. A 2024 Tahoe is 6’7” wide with mirrors folded. That leaves 8 inches per side to the jamb. Many locals upgrade to 9’ wide if they remodel.

2. Single Car: 9’ x 7’ — The Modern Single Standard.

What it is*: 9 feet wide, 7 feet tall.  

Where you see it: Any home built after ∼2000, and it’s the #1 single door sold today. Many of these doors are in stock by many Las Vegas garage door repair companies.

Why it won: Trucks and SUVs got wider. Builders realized 8’ was causing mirror damage and insurance claims. 9’ became code-friendly and resale-friendly.  

Why it’s most common: It fits 95% of vehicles comfortably and it’s the default rough opening in new construction from Centennial Hills to Inspirada. If you have a 3-car garage, odds are you have two 9x7s and one 16x7.  

Vegas tip: If your 8’ door is beat up, seriously consider reframing to 9’. Cost is $1000-$1,500 extra, but you’ll never scrape a mirror again.

3. Double Car: 16’ x 7’ — The Vegas Double Door King.

What it is*: 16 feet wide, 7 feet tall.  

Where you see it: Everywhere. This is the default double garage door in 80%+ of Las Vegas homes built since 1990. Many garage door repair Las Vegas techs will tell you they work on these the most.

Why it dominates*: 

- Lot sizes: Vegas tracts are 40’-50’ wide. A 16’ door + 2ft on each side fits perfect.

- Cost: One 16x7 door + one opener is cheaper than two 9x7 doors + two openers.

- HOA standards: Most communities wrote 16x7 into the guidelines. It’s what neighbors have, so it’s what gets approved.

- Fits 2 cars: Two Camrys, two F-150s, or a car + workshop. It’s the sweet spot.

And many HOA's will not let a Las Vegas garage door repair company change the size of your garage doors.

Why it’s the #1 seller: When a spring breaks or the garage door gets hit, homeowners replace with another 16x7. It’s stocked by every local supplier, so you get same-day install. Custom sizes = 2-week wait in July heat.

4. RV Garage: 8’ x 8’ or 10’ x 8’ — The Vegas Specialty.

What it is: 8 feet wide x 8 feet tall, or 10’ x 8’. Sometimes 12’ x 12’ for big rigs.  

Where you see it: Northwest, Southwest, East Las Vegas, and any home on 1/2 acre+ lots. Lake Mead/Henderson areas with boat storage. These garage doors in Las Vegas are very popular with some of the newer home sites.

Why it’s common here: Vegas is an RV/boat city. People drive to Utah, Lake Mead, and Glamis. Builders add RV bays as upgrades. 10’ height clears most Class C RVs and boats on trailers. 10’ width lets you walk around it.  

Why it’s still sold: Retrofits. Homeowners convert 3rd bays or add detached garages. With sun destroying RV exteriors, indoor storage is worth it.  

Vegas quirk: 8’ tall is the bare minimum. Newer RVs with A/C units need 13’6” overall clearance. Many locals wish they’d gone 12’ x 14’ during the build. But, many garage door repair Las Vegas companies do work with local contractors that can do conversions.

5. The “8-Foot Tall” Upgrade: 9’ x 8’ and 16’ x 8’.

What it is: Same width as standard, but 8 feet tall instead of 7.

Why it’s gaining: 

- SUVs got taller: Roof racks, lifts, and trucks don’t fit under a 7’ door with the door open. The bottom section hangs down 8-12”.

- Storage: You can add a car lift or store plywood upright.

Why it’s sold more each year: About 30% of new installs in Vegas are now 8’ tall vs. 10% a decade ago. If you’re replacing a garage door and have the headroom, most companies will upsell you. 

Other Sizes You’ll See, But Less Often.

9’ x 6’6” Old mobile homes and some 1960s apartments near UNLV. Low headroom.

18’ x 7’ or 18’ x 8’ Luxury homes with wide 3-car tandem garages. Not stock — 3-week lead time.

10’ x 7’ Single doors for dually trucks or shop access. Mostly in custom homes in the Northwest.

14’ x 7’ Weird 1990s builder size in parts of Green Valley. Hard to find most replace with 16’ and reframe.

Vegas-Specific Factors That Dictate Size.

1. Heat: 7’ garage doors are standard because taller doors = more sun exposure on the top section. 8’ garage doors need better insulation or they bow.

2. Wind-load code: Clark County requires wind-rated doors. 16x7 is the most common size that’s pre-engineered to meet code. Odd sizes need extra struts = more cost.

3. HOAs: Many limit you to “replace with same size and style.” Want to go from 7’ to 8’ tall? You’ll need ARC approval.

4. Stock: Local warehouses that Las Vegas garage door repair companies deal with carry 8x7, 9x7, 16x7, and 18x7 in white, sandstone, and almond. Pick one of those and you get installed tomorrow. Pick 15’4” x 7’2” and you’re waiting.

How to Tell Your Size in 10 Seconds.

1. Measure the width inside the jamb, not the door itself. Round down to nearest foot: 15’11” = 16’ door.

2. Measure height from floor to top of opening. 6’11” = 7’ door. 7’11” = 8’ door.

3. If you have two doors, they’re almost always 9x7. If you have one wide door, it’s almost always 16x7.

90% of sold garage doors in Las Vegas are one of these: 9x7, 16x7, 8x7, or 8x8 for RVs. The market is standardized because builders, HOAs, and suppliers all aligned on them decades ago.
